How the CDCP Works

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a program from the Government of Canada designed to make dental care more affordable for people who don’t have private dental insurance. If your household income is under $90,000, you may qualify for reduced cost or fully covered dental services through this plan. Coverage under the CDCP is based on your adjusted family net income, which is assessed through your most recent tax return.

Our office charges only the CDCP's established fees. We never bill above the CDCP approved rates. This means no out-of-pocket costs for services fully covered by the CDCP for those with 100% coverage and lower out-of-pocket expenses if you have a co-pay. If you need help confirming your coverage or eligibility, we’re happy to assist.

Adjusted Family Net Income CDCP Covers You Cover (Co-payment)
Under $70,000 100% of eligible services at CDCP rates 0%
$70,000 – $79,999 60% of eligible services at CDCP rates 40% of CDCP rates
$80,000 – $89,999 40% of eligible services at CDCP rates 60% of CDCP rates

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I Qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

You may qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan if you meet all four eligibility requirements:

    • You do not have access to private dental insurance or coverage.
    • You and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, have filed your Canadian tax returns.
    • Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000.
    • You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

Having dental coverage through a provincial, territorial, or federal social program does not necessarily prevent you from qualifying.

  • How Much Does the Canadian Dental Care Plan Cover?

The percentage covered depends on your adjusted family net income:

    • Lower than $70,000: The CDCP covers 100% of eligible costs at CDCP-established fees.
    • $70,000 to $79,999: The CDCP covers 60%, and you pay a 40% co-payment.
    • $80,000 to $89,999: The CDCP covers 40%, and you pay a 60% co-payment.
    • $90,000 or more: You are not eligible for the CDCP.

Even with 100% coverage, you may still have additional costs if the dental office charges more than the CDCP-established fee or if you receive a service that is not covered.

  • How Do I Apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

You must apply directly through the Government of Canada. You may need your Social Insurance Number, date of birth, address, tax information, and information about your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable. Once approved, you will receive your member ID and coverage start date.

  • Which Dental Services May Be Covered?

Depending on your needs and CDCP guidelines, eligible services may include:

    • Dental exams and X-rays
    • Dental cleanings and fluoride treatments
    • Sealants
    • Permanent and temporary fillings
    • Root canal treatments
    • Gum disease treatment
    • Crowns in eligible cases
    • Complete and partial dentures
    • Tooth extractions and certain oral surgeries
    • Some sedation and anesthesia services

Coverage may be subject to clinical criteria, frequency limits, or preauthorization.
